Photoshop World in Orlando, FL

Well I am currently sitting in a lounge at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida attending the Photoshop World conference. So far it has been a great conference and I have two classes left, which are the two I am most excited about.

During my time here I have decided to go back to Canon. I had the opportunity to hold and shoot a Canon 5D again and with words of the 5D Mark II coming out in the fall, I am going to make the move. I am getting the following equipment hopefully in the next week.

Canon 5D w/grip
Canon 40D w/grip (this will probably be my sports camera and just a backup to the 5D)
16-35 f2.8
24-70 f2.8
70-200 f2.8 IS
550EX Flash x 2
1.4 Converter

I am getting ready to head into the last tech expo to speak with more vendors. I am also going to swing my Canon's booth and shoot the 5D again just for fun!!!

may i ask why back to canon?
i have the d200, thinking of getting the d300 or switching back to canon(used to have canon) but this time get the 5d.

from what i hear the focusing system on the new nikons is much better, and is a good selling point as people mention they now have less OOF images, compared to a 5d where the focusing isnt that great.

undoubtably the 5d has better quality than a d300, but overall would it give you more? i.e. more keepers?
the nikons have a much better lcd for checking the images.

anyway my recommendation, dont change for now.
you have invested a lot of money, wait until the new 5d is announced if it is.
and who knows maybe a d300 with a full-frame will be announced.

dont rush into it :). use the camera for now, and its only what 2-3 months away max for the announcement? either way you wont lose more money if you wait, but if you dont and regret it you will.

i know how you feel, every time i use the 5d or any canon system it looks familiar, and its just...canon. Im having the same arguments as to whether i should stick to a mac or go back to windows.
Same thing.

Im happy with my d200 and then im not. I want a d300 and then a 5d. Confused :). I hope my post helps. I usually read read read reviews comments etc and then after some time i just 'rush' into a decision so i can have peace of mind.

Anyway, when i had a canon system, i wasnt impressed by their focusing system thats why i changed. Nikon has a lot going for them now..whereas canon its just the usual argument, i.e. better skin tones.
Try the d2x mode 1, or try some RAW files and compare, either way i dont think it will be that much of a difference.
I wanted the 5d to be so much more when i tried it. It shoots great tones, dynamic range, low noise but its not fun at the same time. Just photo taking.
Oh and back to the focusing, not so great. Actually not good at all.
Prefer my d200, focused fast and accurate and i imagine d300, d3 is better.

Nikons lenses are more expensive much much more expensive and yes thats the only thing that really really really pisses me off.

thats all....
p.s started off as a simple comment. :)

Hello kyriacos,

Well as I agree that the Canon may not focus as fast in low light the Nikon stutters in my experience. I have found so many times that my D300 just doesn't grab ahold of a moving target...something I never experienced with Canon.

My biggest complaint with Nikon and in my opinion a huge complaint. Their RAW files aren't RAW. The camera at 800 ISO (a low ISO for most wedding phtogs these days) is noisy. At 1250 and 1600, I cringe! Its not that it is terrible but when you have shot Canon for a long time, it is pretty bad.

I suggest taking your CF card to a local shop and shooting at higher ISO's but on a person that is lets say 25' from you...just so you have some distance. You will see how terrible the noise really is. With NR (noise reduction) on you will see that you complete lose facial detail at closer focal lengths as it tends to smooth skin. This may be ideal but I would rather have the detail there that I can remove in post, than to have my camera wipe it clean in order to hide noise.

Thank you for posting on my blog!
